just once or twice

it's good for your soul

once we lived in a great city
or so they say
once, when we knew how to breathe
when we knew how to live the fire
and not just burn down old bridges
or exploit humanity and tears
the tears that fed the fire
and didn't wash it away
But the water came
The water came and filled up the drains in the square
And we all became sea-life
Breathing in the flood like air
we swallowed bubbles like Sonic
To live and love here

There were those who climbed
And rebuilt their homes above us
And considered us in a watery grave
We knew we had it better though
Because here we had our second chance
To be better
Better than them, and anyone else "above" us
Because we, you see, we were fish,
and they just couldn't hack it.
